A sloping block becomes usable when the fall is broken into a small number of generous, level terraces, held by properly drained retaining and connected by comfortable steps. Fighting the slope with one enormous wall is usually more expensive and less pleasant than working with it.
Terracing: fewer, larger levels
Two or three broad terraces almost always feel better than five narrow ones. Each level should be big enough to actually do something on: a dining terrace, a lawn, a planted bank.

Retaining and drainage go together
Water pressure behind a wall is the most common cause of failure. Aggregate drainage zones, agricultural drains and a proper outlet are as important as the wall itself.

- Stabilise banks with dense groundcovers and deep-rooted shrubs
- Use larger plants at the base and lower planting toward the top to keep views open
- Mulch heavily and irrigate carefully, because slopes shed water fast
- Terrace planting beds so soil and mulch stay where they were put
