Drainage & Earthworks

Excavation, level shaping, surface falls and subsoil drainage that make everything above them work.

Designed for the site. Built for the long run.

Most landscape failures are water failures. Before a wall, a lawn or a paved terrace goes in, we work out where water arrives, where it collects and where it is legally allowed to go. Earthworks and drainage are the least visible part of a project and the part that decides whether the rest survives.

What it brings to the project

  • Water directed away from buildings and paving
  • Lawns and beds that recover after heavy rain
  • Longer life for walls, surfaces and planting
  • Usable levels shaped from difficult ground

Well suited to

  • Wet, boggy or poorly draining yards
  • Clay soils across Melbourne's east
  • High-rainfall South Gippsland properties
  • Cut and fill for terraces and building surrounds

Materials and landscape elements

Material selection is resolved in context. We consider the home, weather exposure, expected use, maintenance and how each finish will sit beside the planting as the garden matures.

  • Agricultural drain and geotextile
  • Free-draining aggregate
  • Pits, channel drains and stormwater lines
  • Imported topsoil and structural fill

How we approach the work

01

Diagnose

We look at falls, soil, existing stormwater and where water actually goes during rain.

02

Excavate

Levels are cut and shaped, unsuitable fill removed and the ground prepared.

03

Drain

Surface falls, subsoil drainage and outlets are installed and connected before finishing works.

Common questions

Why is my lawn always wet?

Usually compaction, heavy clay, a flat or reversed fall, or water arriving from elsewhere on the property. The fix depends on which of those is the cause.

Can drainage be added to a finished garden?

Often yes, though it means opening up areas already built. It is far cheaper resolved before surfaces and planting go in.
